The starting position for people that are interested in this field is an installer. They will need to be a high school graduate and be trained in heating and air conditioning systems or some other related experience. They must possess basic math skills and be able to read and comprehend blueprints, in addition to understanding HVAC and electrical codes, plus, and have good mechanical aptitude. They are often considered journeymen, their job will involve installing, changing, inspecting, and maintaining heating and air conditioning equipment.

An HVAC installer is often responsible for the installation of equipment on both commercial and residential properties. Their general knowledge must include a fundamental understanding of forced air systems, wiring, and refrigeration systems. And, they must be able to identify any HVAC repairs and replace any parts or components when needed. An installer must also know how to track and fix the likes of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems and all their associated parts.

As a result, the installer must know how circuit breaker works so they can make all the right connections for any type of HVAC equipment they are installing. This can often mean determining the right size wires that need to run to the appropriate breaker. When working with forced air systems, the installer will often need to identify and install the right sheet metal needed for the ductwork. When working on refrigeration systems, they will also have to establish the piping needed for the chilled and hot water systems.
